There is a book just released now by Jacob Soboroff called Separated reporting on the humanitarian tragedy—now deemed “torture” by physicians—that happened on American soil. We are speaking of course on Donald Trump’s most notorious decision as president which had secretly been in effect for months before most Americans became aware of the astonishing inhumanity being perpetrated by their own government's policy of separating children from their parents at the border. What most people have not understood is that even though President Trump signed an Executive Order to stop this policy it continues to this very day. This is akin to the torture of little children for his own purpose to use this policy to try and win reelection. He is betting that it will win him votes and energy from his base which does not value the lives of people of color the same as their own. Each day this continues those who stay silent and those who cooperate are as guilty as President Trump. It is this prevalent attitude that has permeated the Republican Party that there are lives which matter less than their own that gives them permission to take these actions in the name of America. This is not the America promised to us by our Founding Fathers and is not the America which has held up the torch of light for the rest of the World to see as a promise of something better. We are better and America is better because of the emigration of the World's tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse from teeming shores across the ocean, the homeless, tempest-tossed: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” paraphrased from ― Emma Lazarus. That is the America I believe in and the America that made the World believe.
